Poker, like any other field or discipline in life has its own virtues, skills that are crucial to the advancement and better development of the poker player abilities. Remember, whilst poker is a game of chance, it is entirely possible to manipulate all of the variables that affect a poker game t o your own personal benefit. One element of maths in poker is that poker is all about fractions, you bet a small amount in the hope of a bigger win, odds of 10:1 will mean that for every $1 you wager, you can win a potential $10 for that amount. A rudimentary understanding of mathematics, particularly within the field of probability and being able to understand odds, is imperative. When you are able to calculate the pot odds, and then compare this to the conduct and acting’s of your fellow players, this will give you a much better idea as to the most appropriate course of action. A basic ratio to always bear in mind is to take the number of cards that will improve your hand, double that number and then add 1. For the purposes of clarity, cards that will improve your hand are known as “outs”. So: No of outs*2(+1)= of odds of winning, in a % form. This is important especially when you start playing for money, being able to determine if the money in the pot will cover your losses, and by how much is crucial in determining how long you should play for. A couple of big wins, with decent odds is far better than a string of small fry bets. This basic understanding of mathematics, is crucial and if you cant get your head around this fundamental process then you should stay away from games wagering money.
