Poker Razz

By: Beny Back

Being familiar with the rules of poker (or whatever variant you happen to be playing) is crucial, not only will it mean that you actually have a fighting chance of winning (or at least not getting beat!) but it also means that you wont get pegged as a “fish” straight away, if players think that you are the weakest link in a game, then you can be sure that they will focus their attention on you. This article will give a breakdown of such poker variant: razz.

The most fundamental thing to remember about razz poker is this: the normal rules of poker are inverted, so to win, you need to have the lowest valued cards, not the highest, and remember that razz is an ante game, meaning that all players must submit their ante before the cards are dealt. Razz is primarily a game of patience, and you need to able to persevere and wait for a suitable time when to make a bid steals when the opportunity arises, all the time playing defensive and tightly. If you have a starting hand of three cards between Ace and five, then you are on a very solid start indeed, also within the solid range is a three card hand between Ace and six, as with the Ace through to five, play aggressively and press the advantage, though keep cautious and play tight in the latter stages of the game.

There are some situations which are just perfect for making an ante steal, if the player to your left has folded, and then deferred to you, make sure to fulfil the bet, and with as much as you can reasonably afford in order to secure the bid and (hopefully) steal the ante.
